Marit Sjøvaag

Marit Sjøvaag is an associate professor in political science and Associate Dean for Customised Programs at BI Norwegian Business School. She researches and teaches in sustainability (with particular focus on energy), international politics, and policy studies.

She holds a Ph.D. in Government studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She has worked with sustainability issues since 2008, initially through the lens of national and international climate policy, and increasingly focusing on energy systems. Her research interests include governance structures and processes, and she is normatively driven by the need for a just and clean energy transition. She is also currently engaged in a large research and innovation project aiming to increase circular use of earth materials in Norway, earthresQue. The project involves 30 user partners from research institutions, public and private companies, as well as civil sector representatives.

She has held several advisory roles. She was a member of the climate advisory council for Oslo municipality in 2016-2017, and an external representative in the Sustainability Council of the Oslo Metropolitan University in 2020-2022. Her educational background is varied, including a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and French, and a Master of Science in political science and business studies. She enjoys teaching at all levels and sees her role as educator predominantly as one of facilitator for student learning through active sense-making and navigation in an increasingly complex information landscape.

Her extensive contact network allows her to identify common challenges across sectors, geographies and institutional roles. As part of her communication and dissemination work she organizes several conferences, such as the BI Norwegian Business School’s annual sustainability conference ‘The Future We Choose’, and a forthcoming international conference on nature accounting.

These conferences are typically inspired by her wish to make high-quality research accessible for a larger audience and to create arenas for individuals to meet. She remains forever curious.
