In recent times emerging markets have outperformed the world´s leading industrialized nations (IMF, 2016, World Bank 2016) in terms of growth rates. It is widely accepted that companies cannot ignore emerging markets which are home to roughly half of the world population. The African continent is predicted to be the motor of future global economic growth (Mckinsey, 2018, PWC 2016, 2018, World Economic Forum 2016, 2018). Already today megatrends such as the demographic explosion, growth of the middle class, rapid urbanization and fast technological adoption are visible and influential.
Fast technological changes, transformation of institutions through continuous policy reforms and rapidly changing industry boundaries, have necessitated for both academics and practitioners alike, the need to better understand the emerging insights that come along with these changes. Applying management theories which were mainly developed in the context of developed economies to the context of emerging markets is likely to be misleading. A discourse regarding the nature, opportunities and challenges of emerging markets is needed in order to further research, practice and education.
